The onset
of diabetes mellitus is insidious, and the clinical course is often chronic. The
dogs with Diabetes mellitus, clinically, exhibit polydipsia, polyuria, weight
loss in spite of polyphagia, bilateral cataracts, and weakness. The disturbances in water metabolism primarily
are due to an osmotic basis. The persistent hyperglycemia and glycosuria cause
an inability of the renal tubular epithelium to concentrate effectively the
urine against the osmotic attraction of the glucose in the glomerular filtrate.
The polydipsia (picture 1) is a mechanism found by the body in an attempt to compensate the
water that is being lost in urine.
